There are bugs on the river year round. The doesn't necessarily mean that when ever you go there there will be mayflies dancing over the riffles or the caddis husks will be will be matting the slow slicks around the rocky shore. But there are and if you are lucky to encounter a hatch of tiny tiny BWO in early November and the air is mild for the season like I did about 10 years ago. In that evening I caught 4 Brown Trout over 18" and one 27" male, All on the same #20 BWO fly! Who said the the Delaware Browns don't come up the Lackawaxen during their spawning season. -November. Of course they could have all been holdovers from summer.

There are size 16 dark stones in the winter. Size 20 to 24 midges all year. Caddis all yea. Some caddis hatches are like blizzards. Some, he green bodied one, make the fish go nuts. The are big yellow orange stones in the spring that fill the bushes. While these guys are crawling its hard to get the trout to key on anything else

There's a Hendrickson (Red Quill) hatch in late April to june that can be outstanding to fish. OOh the March Browns in May. The Gray Fox come right on their heels. Did I mention the caddis. And over the past few years a Brown Drake has been appearing. Size 10 and 12!. The Cahills come on strong in May through June overlapping the Sulphur, PMDs, Pale Duns and other late spring early summer mayflies.

Just as the mayflies start to slow down in mid to late June the Little Yellow Sally Stones appear. The trout love these guys. There's usually a size 14 yellow mayfly shows up about the same time. There a substantial Yellow Drake hatch but the fish don't seem to key on them to often.

Summer comes on and the hatches dwindle but don't disappear. What does disappear are fishing opportunities. PPL generates a lot of power though they modulate the water flow its hard to casually just show up and be able to fish. Call the PPL hotline or check here for generation schedules.

As the second season approaches so do a few great hatches. White Mayflies. BWOs. Caddis. Lot of minny BWOs and even smaller Trico like flies and midges. Oh well its a short period.
