New To The River |
As you drive along the Tow Path you notice the remains of what was once an marvel of engineering and the major artery of coal transportation in the country. The Delaware & Hudson Canal. Built in early 19th century the D&H Canal and Gravity Railroad brought anthracite coal from the coal filed of the Wyoming Valley to the furnaces and factories of New York. It started in Honesdale and wound it way along the lackawaxen to the Delaware. the down the Delaware to Port jervis. Then over the Catskills to Kingston, NY on the Hudson River. The canal shut down at the end of the ninetenth cantury. I won't bore you with my rehashing of canal history. Take some time and visit the toll house at the end of Roebling's Bridge on the New York side. It is run by the National Park Service and has a small but concise display of the history of the canal.
